Cutting Apart: Remote Collaboration for Editor/Director Teams

Recorded live on Wednesday, August 10, 2022.

Your footage is in the can and you're ready to dive into the edit, but wait - the director and editor aren't in the same room. How do you begin to map out the story without index cards on a corkboard? Now more than ever, documentary teams are shifting to virtual tools for a successful collaboration. Director/editor Derek Boonstra (The Bee Gees: How Can You Mend a Broken Heart and The Hunting Ground) will walk you through his Miro brainstorming boards along with editor Sara Newens (On The Record) on their currently in-progress collaboration to nail down the story structure of their documentary film. Then bi-coastal director/editor team Chezik Tsunoda & Claire Ave'Lallemant (Drowning in Silence) will showcase how they used Trello as a visual storyboarding device and organizational tool to get to a completed film without ever stepping into the same room. In a medium that has no “one-size-fits-all” formula, these director/editor teams will provide you with tips and templates for ways to begin charting the expansive world of the documentary edit.
